Philately

Penny Black

Insight to History:  Widely known as collection of stamps of different countries. Actually it is the study of stamps and postal history. The word "philately" is the English version of the French word "philatélie", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864.The Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp ever used in a public postal system. It was issued by United Kingdom in the year 1840 and hence used for official purpose.

My Interest: Really do not remember when i grew this interest. But as far as i remember i was fascinated by a postage stamp which my uncle got me from Sierra Leone. From that day onwards i really started collecting different varieties, types, shapes of stamps. At first it really didn’t matter whether i was collecting a foreign or a national stamp. I was busy collecting stamps as much as i could.

As years passed i really got to know the importance of a stamp and why we have this kind of system. Then i took my own time to re-arrange the stamps i had collected all these years. I put them in an album which are specially designed for keeping stamps, in a synchronized fashion ,wherein we can seggregate into different categories.

Stamps can be issued for different purpose i.e. Public, Official or Commercial use. Official stamps normally consists of historical monuments, eminent personalities like politicians, freedom fighters, authors, etc. Commercial stamps can be of anything like flowers, places, animals, plants, events, etc.
